Penalties and Interest
If you owe money to Revenu Québec, you must pay the debt by the deadline prescribed by law to avoid incurring interest and penalties.
However, if you cannot pay the entire amount owed in one lump sum, you can always propose a payment agreement based on your ability to pay.
Any overpayment you make will be refunded with interest if the refund is made after the deadline prescribed by law.
Interest
Interest on debts and interest on refunds granted under Québec tax laws are capitalized daily on amounts owing.
Under the GST system, different interest rates are applied to amounts owing and refunds. The rates are given on the Prescribed interest rates page on the Government of Canada website.
Cancellation or waiver of interest, penalties or charges
In specific situations, Revenu Québec may cancel or waive interest, penalties or charges at your request.
If you failed to fulfill your fiscal obligations or filed an incomplete or inaccurate return, you can rectify your tax situation by filing a voluntary disclosure application. By doing so, you may be able to benefit from relief in respect of the penalties and interest prescribed under fiscal legislation.
