How the Legal Form of a Business Affects Its Tax Obligations
Businesses can take different legal forms.
The legal form you choose for your business (sole proprietorship, trust, public service body, corporation or partnership) is important, as it will affect
- your fiscal obligations to us (registering for Revenu Québec files, reporting your income, types of forms to complete, income tax payable, etc.)
- your level of liability for the debts of the business
Depending on the legal form you choose, your business may be subject to additional tax measures.
See the Registraire des entreprises website for more information about the legal forms of businesses.
Québec enterprise number (NEQ)
The Québec enterprise number (NEQ) is a ten-digit number that is assigned to you when you register your business with the Registraire des entreprises.
Using the NEQ enables you to identify your business when you contact Québec government departments or agencies, including Revenu Québec.
