How to Apply for the Shelter Allowance
If you meet all the requirements under Are You Eligible for the Shelter Allowance?, you can apply for the program in various ways. The deadline is September 30, 2027.
Using the online service
You can apply for the shelter allowance and send the required documents using the online service in My Account for individuals. It's fast and easy. And when you apply online, you don't have to mail the documents to us.
Using the form
If you cannot apply online, use the Shelter Allowance Application (LEX-165-V).

Required documents
You must provide certain documents when applying. They help determine your eligibility and any amount you may be entitled to.

You're a tenant and you have a copy of your lease or a notice of lease renewal
If you (or your spouse, if applicable) rent eligible housing (rented room, apartment or house), enclose the following documents with your application:
Required documents
- Form LEZ-14-V, Statement of Rent for the Shelter Allowance. Complete parts 1 and 2.
- A copy of your lease (including all schedules) or any notice of lease renewal you received.
If you have a child 18 or over who lives with you, you must also enclose one of the following documents:
- Proof your child is enrolled as a full-time student.
- Form TP-752.0.14-V, Certificate Respecting an Impairment, or federal form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate, confirming that the child has a severe and prolonged impairment.

You're a tenant and you don't have a copy of your lease or a notice of lease renewal
If you (or your spouse, if applicable) rent eligible housing and you cannot provide a copy of your lease or a notice of lease renewal, enclose the following document with your application:
Required document
Form LEZ-14-V, Statement of Rent for the Shelter Allowance. Complete parts 1 and 2 and have Part 3 signed by the landlord or the person you pay rent to.
If you have a child 18 or over who lives with you, you must also enclose one of the following documents:
- Proof your child is enrolled as a full-time student.
- Form TP-752.0.14-V, Certificate Respecting an Impairment, or federal form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate, confirming that the child has a severe and prolonged impairment.

You own the dwelling you live in
If you (or your spouse, if applicable) own the dwelling you live in, enclose the following documents with your application:
Required documents
- A copy of your municipal and school tax bills for 2025.
- A document substantiating the interest paid in 2025 on a mortgage loan or any other type of loan for your dwelling.
If you own a new building, you must provide a document confirming the estimated taxes to be paid in 2026 and a document confirming the estimated interest to be paid in 2026.

- Proof your child is enrolled as a full-time student.

You own a mobile home located on rented land
If you (or your spouse, if applicable) own a mobile home located on rented land, enclose the following documents:
Required documents
- Form LEZ-14-V, Statement of Rent for the Shelter Allowance. Complete parts 1 and 2.
- A copy of your municipal and school tax bills for 2025.
- A document substantiating the interest paid in 2025 on a mortgage loan or any other type of loan for your dwelling.
- A copy of your lease (including all schedules) or any notice of lease renewal you have received. If you do not have them, have the landowner complete and sign Part 3 of form LEZ-14-V.
If you own a new building, you must provide a document confirming the estimated taxes to be paid in 2026 and a document confirming the estimated interest to be paid in 2026.

Processing time
We usually process a complete application within 45 days of receiving it. If you qualify, you will be paid the amounts owing to you since October 1 retroactively.
If you already receive the shelter allowance
If you already receive the shelter allowance, you must reapply every year to continue receiving it. We will send you a reminder when the time comes. You can then apply online or mail us the required forms. If you apply online, do not mail the documents.
Only one person per couple can apply for the shelter allowance. The amount you are entitled to will be the same, regardless of which one of you applies.
