Claiming a Financial Asset
If you are the owner of a financial asset, you can claim the asset by using our online service or by filing form BD-81.1-V, Claim of an Unclaimed Financial Asset by the Owner.
However, if you are the parent or tutor of an owner who is a minor, or the owner's representative, you must file form BD-81.1-V.
Online service
You can use the service in My Account for individuals for claiming financial assets as an owner only if the asset has been identified as belonging to you in the register of unclaimed property.
You can also access My Account to find out the status of the claims you made online.
Sending the form and required documents
You can also claim a financial asset by filing form BD-81.1-V.

If you are an agent or authorized representative of an organization or a business, you must complete form BD-81.2-V, Claim of an Unclaimed Financial Asset by the Authorized Representative of an Organization or a Business.

If you are an heir or a liquidator of a succession, you must complete form BD-81.3-V, Claim of a Financial Asset by an Heir or Liquidator of a Succession.
You must also complete form BD-81.7-V, Designation of a Liquidator, if there are several heirs and you must designate a liquidator of unclaimed financial assets to distribute the property of a deceased person.

To make sure that you enclose all the required documents with your claim form, consult the table below.

Claim rights and fees
If the value of a financial asset is:
- less than $500, you must claim it within 10 years of the date the asset was remitted to the Minister of Finance;
- $500 or more, there is no time limit to claim the asset.
Consult the register of unclaimed property to find out whether you own any unclaimed financial assets.
Note that you must pay fees for services rendered in the provisional administration and remittance of unclaimed property. For more information, click Fees.
Right-holders
You may have received a message in My Account or an Unclaimed Property letter (BNR-5006-V) to inform you that, based on the information we found, we are holding one or more financial assets in your name or in the name of a person related to you. Note that the reference numbers for the financial assets are provided in the letter.
Enter the financial asset's reference number when you consult the register of unclaimed property for a description of the financial asset.
Authorization or power of attorney
You can give a designated person (spouse, family member, accountant) authorization or power of attorney for purposes of the Unclaimed Property Act so they can access the confidential information or documents we hold about you or act on your behalf.
Authorization and power of attorney differ:
- Authorization gives the designated person access to the confidential information we hold about you and the confidential documents that concern you.
- Power of attorney gives the designated person access to the information and documents and allows them to act on your behalf.
So we can send a designated person information about something like unclaimed property belonging to you, you can:
- complete form BNR-107-V, Authorization to Communicate Information or Power of Attorney – Unclaimed Property Act, and send it to the address shown on the form;
- write a letter telling us you are giving the designated person authorization or power of attorney for purposes of the Unclaimed Property Act, and send it to the following address:
