The sharing economy is the exchange of goods, services or expertise between individuals over digital platforms, with or without any money changing hands.

The proliferation of digital platforms has caused an exponential increase in—and greatly facilitated—transactions between individuals, to the point that the term “sharing economy” is often used to refer to all such transactions conducted online.
