Amounts We Collect Under the Support-Payment Collection Program
We collect amounts owed under the support-payment collection program, such as:
- amounts owed by a person who must pay support;
- overpayments made to a support recipient;
- amounts withheld (or to be withheld) by an employer or payer organization that makes periodic payments to a person who must pay support;
- amounts owed by a third party (for example, a financial institution that fails to uphold a seizure by garnishment).
If you must pay support, we can collect it either through source deductions or by means of a payment order.
If your support cannot be collected using either of these methods, or if you still owe support despite one of them being used, we may send you a demand for payment ordering you to pay the support due within 10 days of receiving the demand.
Your cooperation is key if you want to avoid collection measures being taken against you.
If you receive an amount from us that you were not entitled to, you will have to repay it. We may send you a demand for payment ordering you to repay the amount within 10 days of receiving the demand.
Your cooperation is key if you want to avoid collection measures being taken against you.
If you receive a deduction notice instructing to you to deduct support payments from the amounts you pay someone, you are required to comply with it.
If you fail to deduct and remit the amount on the deduction notice and remit it to us (or if you refuse to do so), you become jointly liable with the payer of support for the support owed. In either case, we may send you a demand for payment ordering you to pay the amount due within 10 days of receiving the demand.
