Licence and Decals
If you are established in Québec and you use one or more qualified motor vehicles to transport freight or passengers in and outside the province of Québec, you must file an application for a licence and decals in order to travel in member jurisdictions.
In the case of a long-term lease, the lessee must hold an IFTA licence.
Effective April 1, 2016, only Revenu Québec issues licences and decals. In addition, you can no longer obtain them in person.
To apply for a licence and decals, complete form CA-500-V, Application for an IFTA Licence and Decals, and send it to us by mail with your payment. The licence and decals will be mailed to you within two to four weeks.
Application for additional decals
To obtain additional decals, complete form CA-501-V, Application for IFTA Decals, and send it to us by mail with your payment. The additional decals will be mailed to you within two to four weeks, provided you have filed all your fuel tax returns and you have no taxes, interest or penalties owing.
To ensure that your application is processed as soon as possible, send form CA-500-V, Application for an IFTA Licence and Decals, or form CA-501-V, Application for IFTA Decals, to the Centre de traitement IFTA, at the address shown on the form, as soon as you purchase a qualified vehicle that will travel outside Québec. Be sure to enclose your payment and a copy of the purchase contract.
Do not wait until the vehicle is registered with the International Registration Plan (IRP) to send your application.
If your application requires urgent processing, call the Centre de traitement IFTA at one of the following numbers:
- 418 652-IFTA; or
- 1 800 237-IFTA (toll-free).
Each year, we will send you the form to be completed to renew both the licence and the decals.
The cost of an annual licence, valid from January 1 to December 31, is $55.50 for 2018. Keep the original at your main place of business and a copy inside each qualified motor vehicle you operate.
Decals cost $11.20 per pair for 2018. Two decals, one on either side of the cab, must be affixed in plain sight to the outside of each qualified motor vehicle.
For more information, see document CAR-503.E-V, Affixing IFTA Decals.
The licence and decals indicate that you are authorized to operate in all provinces and states that have signed the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) without having to meet any additional obligations regarding fuel tax.
A driver of a vehicle who does not have the licence and decals may be required to pay duties. A statement of offence may also be issued.
