International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)
Read the information in this section if you transport passengers or freight in and outside Québec using at least one qualified motor vehicle and Québec is your base jurisdiction.
Because Québec is a member jurisdiction under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), you do not have to file fuel tax returns in every member jurisdiction you travel in.
In Canada:
- all provinces are IFTA members
- none of the territories (Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories) are members
In the United States, every state but Alaska, Hawaii and the District of Columbia is a member.
Mexico is not a member jurisdiction.
If you are a carrier subject to the Agreement, you may be bound by the federal fuel charge measures. For more information, read the fuel charge technical information on the Government of Canada website.
