Claiming a Financial Asset

The procedure for claiming an unclaimed financial asset depends on your situation.

Property owner

If you are the owner of a financial asset or the owner's authorized representative, you can claim the asset in one of the following ways:

Online service

You can use the service for claiming financial assets as an owner that is available in My Account for individuals.

Important
You could be the owner of financial assets other than those that have been identified as belonging to you. To claim them, file form BD-81.1-V, Claim of an Unclaimed Financial Asset by the Owner.

You can also access My Account to find out the status of the claims you made online.

Form

You can also claim a financial asset by filing form BD-81.1-V, Claim of an Unclaimed Financial Asset by the Owner.

Authorized representative or tutor of the property owner

If you are an authorized representative or the tutor of the owner of a financial asset, complete form BD-81.1-V, Claim of an Unclaimed Financial Asset by the Owner.

Agent of an organization or authorized representative of a business

If you are an agent or authorized representative of an organization or a business, you must complete form BD-81.2-V, Claim of an Unclaimed Financial Asset by the Authorized Representative of an Organization or a Business.

Heir or liquidator of a succession

If you are an heir or a liquidator of a succession, you must complete the Claim of a Financial Asset by an Heir or Liquidator of a Succession (form BD-81.3-V).

You must also complete Designation of a Liquidator (form BD-81.7-V) if there are several heirs and you must designate a liquidator of unclaimed financial assets to distribute the property of a deceased person.

To make sure that you enclose all the required documents with your claim form, consult the table below.

Claim rights and fees

If the value of a financial asset is:

  • less than $500, you must claim it within 10 years of the date the asset was remitted to the Minister of Finance; 
  • $500 or more, there is no time limit to claim the asset. 

Consult the register of unclaimed property to find out whether you own any unclaimed financial assets.

Note that you must pay fees for services rendered in the provisional administration and remittance of unclaimed property. For more information, click Fees.

Right-holders

You may have received an email, a message in My Account or an Unclaimed Property letter (BNR-5006-V) to inform you that, based on the information we found, we are holding one or more financial assets in your name or in the name of a person related to you. Note that the reference numbers for the financial assets are provided in the letter.

Enter the financial asset's reference number when you consult the register of unclaimed property for a description of the financial asset.

Caution

You may be approached by a person or business that finds persons who may be entitled to unclaimed property (such as heirs or owners). These persons or businesses may charge high fees. You must sometimes pay those fees to be given even preliminary information.

Note that we are not responsible for any fees paid to such a person or business.
