Get help with your rent
Low income? Dependant child? 50 or over?
The shelter allowance program helps individuals and families when rent and mortgage payments eat up too much of their budget. Changes for the period from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023, will help more people take advantage of the program:
- The allowance has been increased from $100/month to $150 or even $170.
- The eligible income thresholds have been increased.
- There is no longer a minimum or maximum rent.
- There is now a single set of eligibility requirements for all applicants, including refugee protection claimants.
If you apply after October 1, you'll get the shelter allowance retroactively for the period from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023.
