The protection of personal information, including that of our employees, is a top priority at Revenu Québec

On July 25, Revenu Québec learned that some of its current and former employees' personal information had been leaked. Rest assured that the tax information and other personal information contained in the tax files of individuals outside the organization is in no way affected.

Have the letters been sent to employees?

The first letters were sent on Friday, August 9. It will take a few days to send all of them.

To date, 98% of the letters have been sent. Due to situations such as death and address changes, we have to undertake additional research before sending the remaining letters.

Who is affected by the leak?

Nearly 23,000 people are affected, including current and former employees of Revenu Québec and individuals employed by some of the its service providers.

How will affected people be informed of the situation?

Affected people will be informed of the nature of the leaked information in writing only in the coming days.

What sort of confidential information was leaked?
  • The leaked information was contained in databases used for administrative purposes by Revenu Québec's human resources department. In most cases, only names and social insurance numbers were leaked.
  • In a small number of cases, the date of birth or salary information was also leaked.
  • Affected employees will be informed of the nature of the leaked information in writing only in the coming days.
  • The tax information and other personal information contained in the tax files of individuals outside the organization is in no way affected.
Did the affected database contain information used for pay or tax purposes?

No. Employees' banking and tax information is in no way affected by the leak.

What steps will be taken to prevent identity theft?

Employees affected by the leak will receive a letter in the coming days. Based on the outcome of the investigation, Revenu Québec will make sure that they have access to tools to protect themselves from illegal use of their personal information.

Will employees be made aware of the outcome of the investigation?

In the future, how can employees be sure that their personal information is safe at Revenu Québec?

Protecting and managing confidential information is a top priority at Revenu Québec. The organization constantly evaluates and minimizes the risk of any breach in the confidentiality of the information in its possession. A new committee was formed on June 26, 2019, to review procedures and improve existing controls in a view to meeting our commitments to our clients. Other measures to tighten controls on the use of confidential information are forthcoming. We will inform you when they are put in place.

Why isn't Revenu Québec offering the same protections as financial institutions in similar situations?

Nothing at this time suggests that the information has been used for malicious purposes or sold to third parties.
Revenu Québec will implement the necessary measures for affected individuals once the investigation has been completed.

No. Affected employees will receive a letter. Nothing at this time suggests that the information has been used for malicious purposes or sold to third parties.
